Virginia Firm Develops Breakthrough Technology to Stop Cyber Attacks

Virginia Firm Develops Breakthrough Technology to Stop Cyber Attacks

WASHINGTON, Feb 01, 2010 -- At a time of increasing national concern over cyber attacks on government agencies and corporations, a small privately-funded Virginia engineering research firm has created a breakthrough technology for blocking cyber attacks that experts say is foolproof.

The firm, InZero Systems of Herndon, has been successfully demonstrating its new computer-protection technology to the Pentagon and other federal agencies, as well as to major defense contractors.

General Wesley Clark, who chairs the firm's advisory board, says the unique, hardware-based technology has been rigorously tested by outside experts and no one has been able to break through to attack computer networks protected by it.

"This is not just a conceptual solution to the threat of cyber terrorism," Clark said. "It is very real. It is eminently practical. It is affordable. And it is available now. Every agency and company that has tested it has found that it cannot be compromised."

"This is a vitally important development for our national defense," he said, "and for the protection of this nation's critical infrastructure."

Four-year-old InZero Systems is headed by Louis R. Hughes, former president of Lockheed Martin, the nation's largest defense contractor, and former executive vice president of General Motors.

"Our technology is essentially what the Administration and Congress have been calling for," Hughes said. "It is a true breakthrough. We are fundamentally changing the architecture of the personal computer to create an unprecedented level of security and control while preserving unlimited accessibility to the Internet and without compromising functionality."

In short, he said, "This really puts the world's hackers out of business."

Hughes said that while software solutions to cyber attacks had been found largely ineffective, InZero Systems took a different approach. "Our technology is hardware-based -- and it can be installed instantly."

Among companies testing the system was Escrypt Inc. of Ann Arbor, Michigan, a leading computer security firm. According to Escrypt president and CEO Andre Weimerskirch, the InZero system "cannot be undermined."

The InZero Secure PC essentially provides two computers in one. An InZero Gateway Module computer is attached to the computer that is being protected. As information arrives from the Internet, the InZero Gateway module isolates and hosts potentially dangerous network applications and processes incoming and outgoing files. It transfers clean files to the main computer -- all instantaneously.

The protected computer is never connected to the Internet. It remains secure while still sending and receiving e-mails, processing attachments, browsing the Internet and downloading and uploading documents. Any viruses, worms and malware are trapped in the InZero Gateway module.

Secure computer networks can be created by interconnecting InZero Gateway modules. Organizations can effortlessly extend their security perimeters even to laptop computers employees take to remote locations. The system provides trusted connections between unfamiliar partners. It serves as a foundation for security for direct communications, cloud computing, grid computing, social networks and online applications.

About InZero Systems

InZero Systems began operations in 2005 with the goal of providing organizations with a far more effective, yet fundamentally different approach to protecting sensitive data. Headquartered in Herndon, Va., the company is led by cyber security experts, entrepreneurs, and Fortune 100 senior executives and has grown to more than 60 employees. Secretary Napolitano Meets with Global Airline Industry Leaders in Geneva to Strengthen Aviation Security Standards

Secretary Napolitano Meets with Global Airline Industry Leaders in Geneva to Strengthen Aviation Security Standards

Release Date: January 22, 2010

For Immediate ReleaseOffice of the Press SecretaryContact: 202-282-8010

Talks Build on Ministerial Consensus Reached Yesterday in Spain to Coordinate on Urgent Enhancement of International Aviation Security Standards

Geneva—Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano today met with members of the International Air Transport Association (IATA)—which represents approximately 230 airlines and more than 90 percent of the world’s air traffic—in Geneva as part of the Department’s ongoing efforts to work with the airline industry to meet both international and U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security standards.

“Effective aviation security relies upon close coordination between airlines, government and law enforcement to identify, deter and disrupt threats,” said Secretary Napolitano. “I am committed to working closely with the airline industry and my international counterparts to strengthen global aviation security standards for passengers traveling to the United States and around the world.”

During today’s meeting—which included IATA CEO and Director General Giovanni Bisignani and leaders from approximately 20 airlines from across Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and North America—Secretary Napolitano emphasized the airline industry’s important role in implementing stronger and more effective international security measures to protect the traveling public.

She outlined four broad areas for international public-private collaboration that will help bolster efforts to protect the aviation system while facilitating legitimate travel: improving information collection and analysis; increasing information sharing and collaboration in passenger vetting; enhancing international security standards; and deploying new screening technology.

Secretary Napolitano also met with officials from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in Geneva on these issues.

Secretary Napolitano’s trip began yesterday in Toledo, Spain, where she met with her European counterparts to discuss ways to strengthen international aviation security standards—the first of a series of global meetings intended to bring about broad consensus on new international aviation security standards and procedures.

“Yesterday, my European counterparts and I reached consensus on a way forward to strengthen the international civil aviation system through enhanced information collection and sharing, cooperation on technological development, and modernized aviation security standards,” said Secretary Napolitano.

Earlier this month, Secretary Napolitano dispatched Deputy Secretary Jane Holl Lute, Assistant Secretary for Policy David Heyman and other senior Department officials to meet with government leaders and major international airport executives in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Australia and South America to review airport security procedures and work on ways to collectively bolster our tactics for defeating terrorists.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) does not conduct screening in international airports. All last point of departure flights to the United States must meet minimum standards set by ICAO as well as any additional security standards set by the TSA.

Following the attempted terrorist attack on Dec. 25, TSA issued a new Security Directive, developed in consultation with law enforcement officials and domestic and international partners, which mandates that every individual flying into the U.S. from anywhere in the world who holds a passport issued by or is traveling from or through nations that are state sponsors of terrorism or other countries of interest undergo enhanced screening.

The Directive also increases the use of enhanced screening technologies and mandates threat-based and random additional screening for passengers on U.S.-bound international flights. DHS also bolstered security at domestic airports through additional explosive detection canine teams, law enforcement personnel, Behavior Detection Officers, enhanced screening and other measures both seen and unseen.

New Study: Airport Screening Deemed Insufficient by Large Segment of Travelers Full body scans preferred over 'pat-downs' at checkpoints

New Study: Airport Screening Deemed Insufficient by Large Segment of Travelers Full body scans preferred over 'pat-downs' at checkpoints

Also, planned travel on the riseSAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 8 - Nearly half of American leisure travelers feel that airport passenger screening techniques are inadequate. In the national State of the American Traveler survey conducted this week by Destination Analysts, 47 percent of American leisure travelers reported they either "Agreed" or "Strongly agreed" that airport screening techniques were not sufficient. Only one-in-five travelers believe that passenger screening is adequate.

Travelers are also seven times more likely to prefer full-body scanning technology versus pat downs at security checkpoints. In a follow-up question, Destination Analysts discovered that the majority (57%) of travelers are either "Comfortable" or "Extremely comfortable" with the use of such technologies--with only about 16 percent being "Uncomfortable" or "Extremely uncomfortable" with full-body scans.
Other notable early findings of the study include Americans' expectations for their future travel and spending appears to be on the mend. 33 percent expect to increase the number of leisure trips they will take in the coming year, up from 28 percent last July. Meanwhile, only 14 percent of American leisure travelers expect to cut back on their travel, compared with 20 percent last July. Similar improvements were seen in expectations for spending on leisure travel, with both areas approaching 2008 pre-recession levels.
"We expect to see modest increases in domestic leisure travel and spending in the upcoming year," says Erin Francis-Cummings, Managing Partner of Destination Analysts. "Despite economic pressures and security threats and uncertainty, Americans are more upbeat about their travel prospects than they were six months ago."
The State of the American Traveler survey is conducted every six months by Destination Analysts. The Winter 2010 survey was conducted online amongst a nationally representative sample of adult Americans. From January 5th-6th, surveys were collected from persons who had traveled at least once in the past 12 months for leisure. In total, 1,011 travelers completed the survey, which has a reliability of +/- 3.1%.
The final report will be available on Monday, January 25 at www.destinationanalysts.com. A preview of selected results can be accessed at http://www.destinationanalysts.com/Airport-Screening-Insufficient-Press-Release.htm
